The 3 Maintenance Checks That Keep Multi-Stage Conveyors Running Right

When it comes to multi-stage conveyors, long-term performance comes down to a few critical alignment and tension points. Across FAST equipment manuals, three areas consistently show up as essential to reliable operation: leveling, squaring, and cord tension.

These aren’t complex tasks. But they make a measurable difference in how your conveyor performs day in and day out.

Leveling: The Foundation of Consistent Performance

Proper leveling ensures your conveyor operates as intended from the moment it’s installed. It’s one of the most important adjustments you’ll make during setup, and it directly affects how much fine-tuning the system needs over time.

When a conveyor isn’t level, forces don’t distribute evenly across the structure. That uneven loading can show up as tracking issues, premature wear on components, and reduced efficiency during extension and retraction. The problems start small, but they compound.

Leveling isn’t a one-time task. It’s a checkpoint worth revisiting after installation, relocation, parts replacements, or periods of heavy use. A few minutes with a level can save hours of troubleshooting later.

Squaring: Keeping Booms Tracking Straight

Boom squaring is one of the most critical yet overlooked maintenance checks on a multi-stage conveyor.

All boom sections need to extend straight and level over the full extension distance. When they don’t, the system can’t operate the way it was designed. Misalignment leads to tracking issues, increased friction between boom sections, and uneven wear that shortens component life.

A standard squaring check involves measuring both sides of each boom using the same reference points. Those measurements should match exactly from side to side. If they don’t, you’ve found the source of problems that might otherwise look like belt tracking issues or unexplained wear.

Think of squaring as alignment insurance. If your booms aren’t square, everything downstream has to work harder to compensate.

Cord Tension: Protecting Power and Movement

Electrical and power cable tension plays a critical role in both safety and functionality, but it’s one of the easiest things to overlook during routine checks.

The balance matters. Too loose and cables risk snagging, abrasion, or damage during extension and retraction. Too tight and you put unnecessary strain on connectors and components, which can lead to loss of connectivity or premature failure.

Small adjustments here prevent bigger issues later. Check tension regularly, especially after maintenance work or component replacements that may have shifted cable routing.

Bringing It All Together

If you only focus on three maintenance checks for your multi-stage conveyor, make them these:

Leveling keeps your system stable. Squaring keeps your system aligned. Cord tension keeps your system powered and protected.

Individually, each one matters. Together, they help ensure your conveyor operates smoothly, lasts longer, and requires fewer reactive repairs.
